Coalition government is all set to introduce 27th constitutional amendment based on the reforms regarding the local governments. Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari discussed the said amendment in a meeting on Sunday.
As per details, Shehbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari met on Sunday to discuss the 27th amendment that would deal with the local government’s reforms and the matters which were missed in the 26th amendment introduced recently.
As per a press release issued from the PM Office, both the leaders discussed the country’s political situation and, economic policies and laid stress on the need to work together for the parliament and democracy.
While talking to a private media house, PM Advisor on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah confirmed that the top leadership from both parties will further discuss the 27th amendment today in Lahore.
The purpose behind introducing the new amendment is to incorporate the legislations requested by different political parties especially the long-standing demand from Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) to amend the Article 140A to empower local governments through funds’ allocations, Sanaullah added.
Recently, the coalition government had introduced 26th amendment in the constitution of Pakistan by getting that approved with two-third majority in the parliament.
It is worth mentioning here that earlier while answering a question regarding his presence in Lahore today, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari replied that he had visited Lahore for other reasons.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also in a new channel’s program said that no such amendment was being discussed or needed at the moment.
CT’s Analysis:
The coalition government has recently introduced 26th amendment regarding the constitutional bench in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The apparent aim behind this move is to shift the constitutional matters to the newly established bench so that regular cases may be heard smoothly.
Now, with the proposition of the 27th amendment, the government is trying to empower the local representatives by giving them the financial liberty in terms of funds allocation.
Both the amendments can be used in the best interest of the public if not misused by the authorities.
