Overview of “SCoPEx”: A project by Harvard University

by Aiza Imtiaz

The scientists of Harvard University have launched a technology based project which is called as SCoPEx. The abbreviation of SCoPEx is “The Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment “. The purpose behind launching SCoPEx is to discover exactly how particulate count number interacts with the Earth’s top atmosphere.

In this project, the study will make clear some of the possible risks and advantages of solar geoengineering which may balance some of the consequences of local weather exchange and complement the efforts to decrease CO2 emissions. The scan of this project will be guided by an impartial committee of unusual scientists and coverage experts.

Stonington Professor of Engineering and Atmosphere Science and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University, Frank Keutsch, stated that climate change is such a serious assignment or challenge that we need to think entirely about our arsenal before fighting against it for reduction in emissions, removal of carbon dioxide and adaptation of solar geoengineering. But solar geoengineering ought not to tackle the root purpose of the local weather exchange – the accumulation of greenhouse gases.

Among scientists, there is a strong consensus which includes the working process on SCoPEx. Scientists need to reduce greenhouse fuel or gas emissions on urgent basis. In this project, it is vital for scientists and engineers to study how to decrease some of the extreme consequences such as severe temperatures, modifications in water availability, and the depth of tropical storms via processes like solar geoengineering.

Solar geoengineering in SCoPEx project is a strategy which would launch a managed quantity of particles into the Earth’s stratosphere, the top atmosphere. These particles would mirror a very small fraction of daylight into space. In the local weather change, scientists need to determine the dangers related to these particles and evaluate their findings.

The SCoPEx is an outdoor experiment of Harvard’s scientists that is designed to estimate the quantitative analysis of aerosol microphysics. This project includes professional contributors for laboratory work who can observe solar geoengineering. This experiment works at the heart of SCoPEx which is known as scientist balloon. This scientific balloon with high altitude would carry an instrument package about 12 miles into the atmosphere. In air mass, a very small quantity of (100 grams to two kilograms) fabric would be launched through the propellers.

To modify the resulting changes in air, mass with the same balloon measures the atmospheric chemistry. The instrumental balloon carries additional measure wind that enables the turbulence for checking hypotheses about atmosphere and climate change.

In international relations, the project of SCoPEx is quite controversial and highly risks geoengineering approach because many scientists claim that it can harm world’s weather system at high level. Through this project, the natural working system of the atmosphere can bring negative elements to earth’s structure.
