Pakistan slams India for arms race in region

Pakistan has raised its voice with United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) Disarmament and International Security Committee against the increasing arms race and supply of sensitive technologies to India.

Reportedly, Pakistan’s Mission to the UN Counselor Gul Qaiser who was leading the Pakistani delegation in UNGA’s committee of Disarmament and International Security talked about the issue of arms’ race in the South Asian region on Monday.

The said committee conducted a convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) in the session where Qaiser informed the committee about the growing supply of arms and other sensitive technology in the South Asian region particularly to India.

Gul Qaiser highlighted the importance of peace-building and prevention from war as the world was already suffering from genocide and other fatal conflicts. He also raised his voice against the increasing insecurity and condemned the behavior of some states which continuously finance wars.

While talking about conventional weapons, Qaiser said that Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) has remained unsuccessful in regulating the conventional weapons as it is unable to ensure the use of these weapons for humanitarian, legal, and defense purposes. On the other hand, ATT is silent on the smooth flow of weapons across the world causing disputes, genocide and wars.

Qaiser also showed concerns over the security issues in South Asia as India is continuously involved in arms’ trade which ultimately disturbs the peace of the region. India is also violating multiple resolutions on disarmament in the region passed by the UN, he added.

While presenting Pakistan’s stance over conventional weapons, the counselor asked the CCW that Pakistan’s foreign policy was determined to the establish limited relations with the countries which are involved in producing and selling the weapons of mass destruction. Pakistan always promotes balance between the use of weapons for humanitarian considerations and the legitimate security interests of the states, he said.

Pakistani delegation appealed to the UNGA’s Disarmament and International Security Committee to develop a monitoring mechanism to trace out the routes from which non-state actors and terrorists acquire Explosive Devices (IEDs).

It is worth mentioning here that Qaiser has acknowledged the efforts of UN Disarmament and International Security Committee’s work on Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS), also known as ‘killer robots’, that would help in creating compliance between weapons and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and create consistency with the objectives and purposes of the CCW.

Qaiser also gave recommendations regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence in military capabilities and said that autonomous weapon systems require urgent international attention.
