Federal Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja tabled the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill in the National Assembly (NA) today. This bill is part of Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif’s national digital agenda spanning economy, society, and governance.
Reportedly, Federal Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja taking PM national digital agenda ahead by proposing the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill in NA.
The major purpose behind this bill is to transform Pakistan into a digitally empowered nation by fostering a dynamic digital society, a strong digital economy, and efficient digital governance.
The bill also recognising the power of digital technologies to drive innovation, economic grow,th and societal well-being as well as in sustainable development in public service delivery, and modernise governance for improved transparency and effectiveness.
The bill also proposed establishing key governance bodies of the National Digital Commission (NDC), Strategic Oversight Committee (SOC), and the Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA).
The PM will chair the NDC with federal and provincial leadership. The NDC will develop the strategic vision and policy framework for the country’s digital transformation.
The PDA will be responsible for implementing NDC policies by coordinating and harmonising digital initiatives across all levels of government.
The SOC will monitor the PDA’s performance by providing an independent review to the NDC ensuring alignment with the suggested policies.
The main focus of the bill is the National Digital Masterplan. It’s a plan to organize and improve digital projects across all levels of government including provincial and local levels, avoid wasting resources, grow the economy, and make public services better.
The bill further highlights effective data governance and ensures secure responsible data management by the development of digital public infrastructure.
It is worth mentioning here that the enactment of this legislation would lead Pakistan to digital technologies for economic growth, modern governance, and digital inclusion. It would also align the nation to the global best practices in the digital age.
