by Fraaz Mahmud Kasuri

Late night announcement of moon sighting s-long meetfor Eid ul Fitr by the Ruet e Hilal Committee became a fun activity for Pakistanis when they started sharing their views about the emergency Chaand Raat and Choti Eid celebrations.

After an hours-long meeting of the Ruet Committee, Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad announced on Wednesday mid-night that enough evidences of moon sighting had been received by the committee from several parts of the country and Eid ul Fitr would be celebrated on Thursday.

Interesting thing is that, a few days back, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain had announced that according to the Ruet Mobile Application Eid ul Fitr would be celebrated on May 14 (Friday).

Keeping this announcement in view, nobody was actually waiting for the meeting of Ruet e Hilal Committee for the moon sighting. However, late night announcement of the committee about the moon sighting triggered a debate on the internet when people started making fun of this whole activity.

People called it ‘Emergency Eid celebrations’, ‘Achanak Eid’, ‘COVIDfied Eid’ and many other things which struck their minds.

Some people announced not to celebrate Eid this year to show solidarity with the people of Kashmir and Palestine while some called it an intentional move by the government to avoid rush in bazars on Chaand Raat. Some also called it a move by the first lady to avoid two sermons in a day as it is said that two sermons in a day are not a good omen for the government.

Here are some of the screenshots of the reactions of the people over the moon sighting episode:
