Journalists tortured during PTI protest in Rawalpindi

Punjab Police snatched mobile phones and beat journalists and reporters on motorway 1 toll plaza during the media coverage of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur’s march towards Punjab province for Pakistan Tareek Insaf’s (PTI) rally in Liaquat Bagh on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

As per media reports, Punjab police beat and snatched mobile phones from the journalists and reporters of different media channels today during the coverage of Ali Amin Gandapur’s march towards Punjab. The incident took place when the reporters were busy in the media coverage of Gandapur’s march towards Punjab province for Pakistan Tareek Insaf’s (PTI) rally in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

As per details, the participants of Gandapur’s convoy at the motorway 1 toll plaza removed the barriers forcibly and moved ahead. In the reaction, the police started beating the PTI workers and journalists. During the scuffle, some journalists were severely injured as well. Further, Punjab police arrested the journalists from different media houses and shifted them to the unknown places.

The journalist community has termed the incident a direct attack on the independence of media in Pakistan and a sheer violation of the ‘Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021’.
