After the two prolonged in-camera sessions of Special Parliamentary Committee regarding the appointment of the new chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday, the name of Justice Yahya Afridi has been finalized by the committee members. The government as per law had to finalise the name of the new chief justice till October 22 before 12AM.
As per reports, the parliamentary committee that was formed first time in the history of Pakistan for the selection of the chief justice of Pakistan selected the name of Justice Yahya Afridi as the next top judge of the country.
The 12-member Parliamentary Committee comprised members from the ruling coalition and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SCI) as well. However, the members from SCI boycotted the parliamentary committee’s meeting following the decision made by PTI’s political committee.
PTI leader Hamid Khan Advocate has said that the party will condemn this nomination and launch protests against this illegal selection. He also said that such political move will divide the Supreme Court and Justice Yahya would not accept this nomination.
It is pertinent to mention here that a four-member committee comprising Raja Pervez Ashraf, Rana Ansar, Kamran Murtaza, and Ahsan Iqbal was asked to convince the members from SIC to become a part of the parliamentary committee. However, PTI Chairman refused to become a part of the committee proceedings saying that as per the decision made by PTI’s political committee, they will not become a part of the parliamentary committee.
PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal while talking to the journalists criticised SIC’s decision and said that the government had tried its best to convince the PTI members but they did join the meeting.
It can be mentioned here that the process of the appointment of the new chief justice may take 2 to 3 days as outgoing CJP Faez Isa is retiring on October 25, 2024.
