Kurram violence sparks Federal-KPK war of words

CT Newsroom

The federal government blamed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government for the administration’s inability to cope with security challenges in the province.

Reportedly, after the recent violent situation in the Kurram district, the federal government called the KPK government incapable of handling security challenges and making the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) ineffective.

However, KPK Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur strongly rejected the federal government’s claim in the press conference held in Peshawar on Sunday and said that ‘the law-and-order situation has improved in our government. The counterterrorism department was fully functional and carried out thousands of successful operations against terrorists.

‘The provincial government will disburse an additional Rs1 billion to the CTD. Special cells have been prepared for the department to keep the arrested suspects’, he further said.

The KP CM highlighted the progress of the province in combating terrorism by informing the press about the purchasing of 20 bulletproof vehicles and handing over funds to the CTD personnel for buying 300 kits and drones. The more people are inducted into the prosecution’s team next week. The plots are allotted to the heirs of martyred officials, he added.

CM Gandapur fired back at the federal government by saying that the federal government was only creating confusion among the KP people and till now the federal government has not disbursed a single penny to the province for counterterrorism.

It is worth mentioning that during the last 10 days of armed conflict in the Kurram district caused 118 deaths out of which 43 people were killed in an opened fire on passengers on November 21. On Sunday, under the KPK Governor Faisal Karim Kundi conducted the grand jirga with the support of local Pakhtun elders and political leaders for a ceasefire in the Upper and Lower Kurram district. While KPK CM Gandapur was not part of the grand jirga. The governor also announced a multi-party conference on December 5 to address the Kurram conflict.
